Solange

Seeing someone smile who was initially scared, angry or hurt — that's what fills my cup.

About me

I enjoy gardening, listening to music (anything except country or anything heavy), reading books that expand the mind, learning about geopolitics, and bushwalking. Although a novice, I am also enjoying learning how to play the guitar.
My main values are honesty, authenticity, respect, understanding and open-mindedness. I also value awareness, fairness and justice, integrity, hope and balance. I believe that having these values along with having empathy and compassion create genuine connections and a safe place, allowing people to open up and be vulnerable. Whether in my personal or professional dealings, I gain the greatest fulfilment by watching others experience personal growth. I strongly believe that by helping others change their perspective, they can develop an optimistic outlook, thereby changing their experience.
I strongly believe that one’s work is an extension and representation of who you are. I therefore carry my values in everything I do, including work. My professional reputation has always been important to me, and I pride myself in the mark I have left.

Experience and Skills

Besides conducting investigations, I was also tasked with training and supporting newcomers and problem solving and assisting existing investigators. (Refer to Resume)
I have been dealing with people suffering from physical and psychological injuries (anxiety, depression and PTSD) for approximately 28 years. The majority of the cases I managed were challenging and always involved me dealing with vulnerable people. My ability to modify my mode of communication allowed me to overcome the barriers presented by people, allowing me to build rapport. My greatest ongoing achievements were that people opened up and would often express feelings of being heard and/or understood.
My ability to actively listen to people allows me to understand others’ perspective. This coupled with my ability to modify my interactions with people from diverse educational, cultural and
social backgrounds, allows me to liaise and build trust and rapport. I am empathetic by nature and have always been a support for those around me. My time management and organisational skills is also something that I apply to my personal and professional life.
I have a degree in psychology, a HR diploma and a Life Coach diploma (among other non-related training).

Why I am a Support Worker

My desire and natural drive to make a positive change in the life of others has to date been secondary to my primary roles in my professional career. This however was the one thing that gave me fulfillment. I now wish to make this my primary professional role. Seeing someone smile/laugh who was initially scared, angry or hurt is what fills my cup.
I believe that improving someone’s quality of life and/or helping them achieve their goals is the basic requirement of this role. I would also hope to make people feel special and valued. Helping them feel empowered and building their self-esteem is how I would hope to make a difference.
